The process is as follows:
Get in touch with us and book a lesson! We take any riders from total beginners to experienced from ages 7 plus!
We'll pair you with one of our skilled, safe horses or ponies for your Fresh Start Lunge Lesson! One of the skilled, knowledgeable staff will walk you through it and get you going in no time!
You'll continue to progress and will try other horses, heading into the 30 minute lesson!
Then finally it's the hour lesson! Grouped with equally skilled riders, you'll all learn from each other and push yourselves to go further!
Sally can offer anyone willing to learn so much, with her numerous years in the industry and bucket loads of experience! You'll feel confident, safe and assured with us- and it's a proper hands on experience as we feel it's good to get to know the horses, to groom and tack them up. We offer pony days for anyone who rides with us to get this experience for £55 during the holidays.
So come along, you'll meet our 18 horses, 2 dogs and 1 barn cat that likes to perch on people's laps! You'll learn about horses, how to ride properly and with the horse, horsemanship, bonding, how reiki can help aid and work with you and the horse, the value of stretching before hand and the do's and dont's of horse care!

BIRTLES EQUESTRIAN operates with a cancellation policy! If you cancel the day before your lesson, you will be charged half your standard lesson fee. If you cancel on the day of your lesson - under 24hrs notice, you will be charged the FULL LESSON FEE.
ADDITIONALLY:
If you pay for a block of 5 lessons they are CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. A missed week will still be charged and will not be carried over.
We understand that some circumstances cannot be avoided- and will take care to listen and understand when those arise.

Birtles Equestrian was established over 65 years ago by Adeline Darbyshire. The business grew over the years, adding a 40 x 20 indoor school and outdoor jumping paddock.
Adeline’s daughter, Sally then moved into the business and brought with her the healing expertise. The business continues to thrive with the introduction and training of new horses and ponies alongside expanding her customer base for both the riding school and the healing practice.
Birtles Equestrian has since acquired it’s up to date First Aid Training and Safeguarding Training in line with it’s new status as ABRS Approved!
A little bit about us:
Birtles Equestrian is unique in what it offers- teaching to create professional riders that value a bond between the horse and rider.
Here at Birtles we have 18 horses that are consistently schooled and trained, with new horses joining the herd to be trained by Sally herself and her team. With her methods of dinging, lunging, loose lunging and loose jumping the new horses learn how to carry themselves and respond to the leg aids. And those that are experienced continue to work on their education and keep those skills sharp!
With our lessons we think for the rider and the horse- and have chosen what we believe is the best way to get the rider learning how to ride well and safely. We offer ‘Fresh Start Lessons’ which are priced at £35 and aim to introduce the rider to horse riding- whether they’ve never sat on a horse before or simply need a refresher! These are lunge lessons where we strive to get the rider balanced, confident, comfortable and most importantly- mastering that rising trot!
Once our riders have shown that they are capable at walk, trot, halt and turning while holding the reins independently they are then placed within our group lessons! For our riders that have completed their fresh start lunge lessons- they go into 30 minute lessons that are held throughout the week!
Then they can progress into our one hour classes that are held throughout the week!
Every rider is paired with a horse that they get along with- as we want to make sure it’s enjoyable for both rider and horse. We've got a great herd of horses here at Birtles and none are your typical riding school horse. They each have something to offer and if you work on yourself hard enough and are willing to learn, you'll go far with them!
